Rochester Institute of Technology

A modern oasis of higher learning, RIT is a reflection of great promise—a center for innovation and creativity and a community devoted to advancing those ideals.

The origins of RIT date back to 1829. That’s when a group of Rochester businessmen formed the Athenaeum, providing residents with access to literature, science and the arts. Years later, its merger with Mechanics Institute enhanced an important pipeline of skilled workers for a rapidly growing city.

In 1944, the institute adopted the name Rochester Institute of Technology and started awarding degrees in the years that followed. Growth in the number of programs that RIT offered and the size of its student population prompted the university to relocate from its urban setting. The new campus, located in suburban Henrietta, opened in 1968.

Today, RIT is internationally recognized for academic leadership in computing, engineering, imaging technology, and fine and applied arts, in addition to unparalleled support services for students with hearing loss at its National Technical Institute for the Deaf.
